Breast Implants Guide

When it comes to breast augmentation surgery, implants are the star of the show. However, there are so many aspects of breast implants that can be customized, including size, shape, profile, and material, that it can be overwhelming to think about. This blog will walk you through key factors to consider so you can go to your consultation feeling confident and informed.

Understanding Implant Size: CC vs Cup Size
One of the most commonly cited motivations for pursuing breast augmentation surgery is an increase in cup size. Cup size is often the main way we discuss breast size in everyday conversation, but it’s important to know that breast implants aren’t measured in cup sizes but rather in cubic centimeters (cc), which refers to the implant’s volume.
In general, an increase of approximately 150 cc to 200 cc may translate to about one cup size. That said, bra sizing varies widely across brands and bra styles. Additionally, factors such as your existing breast tissue, chest width, and body proportions will all influence your final result. That’s why cup size isn’t guaranteed.
As a general reference:
- 150–200 cc will result in a smaller enhancement.
- 300–350 cc results in a moderate increase and is the commonly chosen range.
- 400 cc and above will yield a fuller, more dramatic enhancement.
Rather than focusing solely on cup size, your surgeon will take precise measurements of your chest wall, breast width, tissue thickness, and skin elasticity. These details ensure your chosen implants fit your anatomy and will deliver beautiful, balanced results.
Implant Profile: Projection Matters!
Implant size is only one part of the equation for aesthetically pleasing breasts. Implant profile refers to how far the implant extends outward from your chest wall, and it plays a major role in your final silhouette.
Two implants can have the same volume (for example, 350 cc) but look very different depending on their profile. A lower-profile implant will distribute that volume across a wider base for a softer, more subtle appearance. A higher-profile implant concentrates volume into a narrower base, creating greater forward projection and upper pole fullness.
Modern implants, such as Motiva®, offer multiple profile options. These include Mini (moderate), Demi (moderate-plus), Full (high), and Corsé (ultra-high), allowing for highly customized contouring. Choosing the right profile depends on your chest width, natural breast dimensions, and aesthetic goals.
Implant Shape & Material
Beyond size and profile, you will also choose the shape and material of your breast implants.
Round implants are designed to provide fullness throughout the breast and often enhance cleavage. Anatomical (teardrop) implants are shaped to mimic the natural shape and slope of the breast, with greater volume in the lower portion.
In terms of material, you can choose between saline and silicone implants. Most patients today choose silicone gel implants due to their soft, natural feel. Advancements in implant technology have led to highly cohesive gel options that maintain shape while moving naturally with your body.
As an example, Motiva® SmoothSilk® implants are designed with advanced gel technology that creates natural movement. Sitting up, the gel moves with gravity for an ultra-natural appearance, while lying down, the gel redistributes to appear more round, similar to how natural breast tissue behaves.
Choosing the Right Implant for Your Body & Lifestyle
Breast implants must be customized to your body and aesthetic preferences. The ideal implant will complement your frame and align with your daily activities.
You may prefer a smaller or moderate implant if you:
- Have a petite frame
- Want a more subtle enhancement
- Like intense workouts or play high-impact sports
- Want to minimize added weight on your chest
A larger implant may be appropriate if you:
- Have a broader build or a taller frame
- Want more dramatic enhancement
- Want prominent cleavage
- Wish to have a pronounced hourglass figure
Long-term considerations can help guide your decisions, too. Larger implants carry more weight, which may affect your skin elasticity over time. During your consultation, your surgeon will evaluate your tissue characteristics and discuss what will likely provide the most sustainable results.
Dr. Thompson offers Crisalix® imaging, which provides you with a 3D view and a 4D augmented reality perspective of how you may appear after surgery. This can be incredibly helpful in determining which volumes and profiles work best for your body.
