KYBELLA® for Double Chin: Results, Cost & How Many Treatments You Need
Posted October 30, 2026 in Kybella

A double chin is not always related to weight. Genetics, aging, and the natural way your body stores fat can all contribute to fullness beneath the chin, even if you maintain a healthy lifestyle. If this area bothers you but you would prefer to avoid surgery, KYBELLA® offers an injectable approach specifically designed to reduce fat beneath the chin.
KYBELLA® double chin treatment uses deoxycholic acid to destroy targeted fat cells in the submental area. Your body gradually clears the affected cells, reducing fullness and creating greater definition between the chin and neck. Because the treatment works gradually and the number of sessions varies, understanding the process can help you develop realistic expectations.
At Thompson Center for Plastic Surgery in Colts Neck, New Jersey, Dr. Rudolf Thompson personally performs injectable treatments and customizes treatment according to each patient's anatomy and goals.

How Does KYBELLA® Double Chin Treatment Work?
KYBELLA® is an FDA-approved injectable treatment for adults with moderate to severe fullness associated with fat beneath the chin, also known as submental fat.
The active ingredient in KYBELLA® is synthetic deoxycholic acid. Deoxycholic acid occurs naturally in the body and helps break down and absorb dietary fat. When KYBELLA® is injected into submental fat, it destroys the targeted fat cells. Your body then gradually processes and clears the affected cells from the treatment area.
Once these fat cells are destroyed, they can no longer store or accumulate fat. For this reason, additional KYBELLA® treatment is generally not expected after you have reached your desired result, although changes in weight, skin laxity, and the natural aging process can continue to affect the appearance of your chin and neck over time.
KYBELLA® is specifically approved for fat beneath the chin. It should not be viewed as a general injectable fat-reduction treatment for other areas of the body.
How Many KYBELLA® Treatments Do I Need?
One of the most common questions about treatment is, “How many KYBELLA® treatments do I need?” There is no single number that applies to everyone.
Your treatment plan depends on the amount and distribution of fat beneath your chin, your anatomy, and the degree of improvement you would like to achieve.
KYBELLA® may be administered in up to six treatment sessions, with each session scheduled at least one month apart. In clinical studies, many patients experienced visible results after two to four treatments. The number of treatments varies based on the amount and distribution of submental fat and the patient's treatment goals.
Each appointment involves a series of small injections placed strategically throughout the treatment area. The number and placement of injections are determined by the size and shape of the area being treated rather than by a standard injection pattern for every patient.
More treatment is not necessarily better. Dr. Thompson can assess your response as your results develop and determine whether another session is appropriate.
What Can I Expect From KYBELLA® Before and After Treatment?
Changes after KYBELLA® develop gradually because your body needs time to clear the fat cells affected by treatment. You should not expect to walk out of the office with your final chin contour immediately after your injections.
When evaluating KYBELLA® before and after photos, look at the degree of fullness beneath the chin and the transition between the chin and neck. Some patients achieve a noticeable reduction in submental fullness after several sessions, while the degree of change varies according to the amount of fat present, anatomy, number of treatments, and individual response.
Swelling is common after KYBELLA® injections and can temporarily make the area beneath the chin appear fuller before it looks smaller. Other common reactions include bruising, pain, numbness, redness, and areas of firmness around the injection sites.
Because treatment is performed close to important nerves and structures in the neck, provider experience and careful injection technique are particularly important. KYBELLA® also carries risks beyond temporary injection-site reactions, including nerve injury in the jaw that can cause an uneven smile or facial muscle weakness and difficulty swallowing.
Your consultation gives Dr. Thompson an opportunity to evaluate whether the fullness beneath your chin is primarily caused by submental fat. Loose skin, prominent neck muscles, or other anatomical factors may affect the type of improvement KYBELLA® can provide and whether another treatment would be more appropriate.
How Much Does KYBELLA® Cost?
KYBELLA® cost varies because treatment is customized to the individual patient. There is not one price that accurately represents what every patient will pay.
The total cost can be influenced by:
- The amount of submental fat being treated. A larger treatment area may require a different amount of product than a smaller area.
- The amount of KYBELLA® used during each session. Treatment is planned according to the size and distribution of the fat beneath your chin.
- The number of treatment sessions. Someone who reaches the desired improvement after fewer sessions will have a different overall treatment cost than someone who undergoes additional sessions.
- Your individualized treatment plan. Dr. Thompson determines the appropriate approach after evaluating your chin and neck and discussing the change you hope to achieve.
This is why comparing KYBELLA® prices without knowing what the quoted price includes can be misleading. A price for one treatment session does not necessarily represent the total amount you may spend to achieve your desired result.
After Dr. Thompson evaluates the area beneath your chin and develops a treatment plan, the practice can provide a more meaningful estimate of your anticipated cost.
Is KYBELLA® the Right Submental Fat Treatment for Me?
If you are researching submental fat treatment in NJ, the first step is determining what is actually creating the fullness beneath your chin.
KYBELLA® is intended to improve moderate to severe fullness associated with submental fat in adults. It does not tighten significant loose skin, and it is not designed as a weight-loss treatment. Someone whose primary concern is skin laxity or another cause of fullness may need a different approach.
KYBELLA® may be worth discussing if you:
- Are bothered by fat beneath your chin. The treatment specifically targets submental fat.
- Prefer a non-surgical approach. KYBELLA® reduces targeted fat through injections rather than an operation.
- Understand that improvement is gradual. Results develop as your body clears the affected fat cells.
- Are comfortable with the possibility of multiple treatments. Some patients require several sessions to reach their treatment goals.
- Have realistic expectations. KYBELLA® reduces submental fat but does not address every possible cause of fullness or every aspect of the chin and neck.
A consultation is important because the appearance of a double chin can involve more than fat alone. Dr. Thompson can evaluate your submental fat, skin quality, chin and neck anatomy, and aesthetic goals before recommending KYBELLA®, CoolSculpting® Elite, or another approach.
