BOTOX® Cosmetic, Dysport®, and XEOMIN® are injectable neuromuscular-blocking toxins that are commonly used to correct wrinkles in the face and neck. Men and women who have crow’s feet, deep furrows in their brows, deep nasolabial lines, and other facial wrinkles often seek this facial injectable to correct the signs of aging. The main difference between the BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport® is that Dysport® has less of a protein load than BOTOX® Cosmetic, which means it tends to spread more during injection. XEOMIN® has none of the additives that are found in Dysport® and BOTOX® Cosmetic. Depending on your desired results, Dr. Thompson can help you decide whether BOTOX® Cosmetic, Dysport®, or XEOMIN® is right for you.
The ideal candidate for either BOTOX® Cosmetic, Dysport®, or XEOMIN® can relate to the following:
Dr. Thompson may apply ice to the area before beginning the treatment in order to constrict the vessels in the skin. This will help reduce bruising and decrease the small amount of pain associated with the injections. You may be asked to contract your facial muscles so the doctor can see exactly where to inject. Each treated muscle will receive about three injections to relax the muscle, making it harder for the wrinkles to appear. Mild stinging or burning may occur as the toxin formula flows to the muscle, and gauze may be pressed against the treated area after the procedure. Depending on the number of areas treated, the entire process usually takes between 10 and 30 minutes.
Recovery from minimally invasive procedures like BOTOX® Cosmetic, Dysport®, and XEOMIN® is generally short. Patients should avoid bending over or laying down for a few hours after the procedure. Rubbing the treated area should be refrained from to avoid spreading the toxin to surrounding muscles. Regular physical activities can be resumed just a few hours after the procedure.
It takes two to seven days to see an improvement in wrinkles and lines from BOTOX® Cosmetic, Dysport®, or XEOMIN®. Because results are not permanent, subsequent treatments can be scheduled every three to four months. You may be asked to return for a follow-up appointment after two weeks, but most patients can wait until the next injection appointment for an examination of the injection areas unless an obvious problem arises.
Although BOTOX® Cosmetic, Dysport®, and XEOMIN® are minimally invasive procedures, there are still risks involved. These include:
