Minimally Invasive Liposuction

Smartlipo is a type of liposuction that utilizes laser technology. It can be performed on almost any area of the body to reduce localized fat deposits that cannot be reached with diet and exercise. It is a procedure meant to “sculpt” the body, and it should not be used as a weight loss surgery. Smartlipo is a minimally invasive procedure that is more gentle than traditional liposuction and can actually tighten the skin as well.

“I want you to know that you guys are the best. Your professionalism and compassion made may surgery a lot easier. Dr. T, your hands are magic gifts and I’m so thankful.”

Am I a Candidate for Smartlipo?

The ideal candidate for Smartlipo can relate to the following:

  • Is in good physical health
  • Has realistic expectations of the procedure
  • Does not smoke
  • Is at a healthy body weight
  • Has exhausted other options to reduce localized fat

How Is Smartlipo Performed?

Because Smartlipo is a minimally invasive procedure, local anesthesia is administered to keep you comfortable during surgery. A cannula (hollow tube) with a laser fiber through it is inserted into the treatment area through a small incision. As the doctor moves the cannula back and forth under the skin, fat is vacuumed out. When the laser fiber comes in contact with the fat cells, it plumps them and they melt into a fatty oil. This triggers the production of collagen, which actually tightens the skin in the treated area. For this reason, laser-assisted liposuction is a better option than traditional liposuction for those with loose skin and areas of localized fat. Smartlipo is sometimes referred to as “lunch hour liposuction” because the entire procedure takes an hour or less.

How Long Is My Smartlipo Recovery?

Although the procedure is much quicker than regular liposuction, patients should still allow at least two days of downtime to recuperate. Because the incisions are so small, no stitches are needed. The laser closes off tiny blood vessels, so there is less chance of bleeding, swelling, and bruising compared to regular liposuction. Your doctor may suggest that you wear a compression garment to reduce any swelling and to help your body take on its new shape following the procedure.

When Will I See My Smartlipo Results?

Many begin to see the results of Smartlipo about a week after the procedure, but the final look may not be apparent for up to six months. Typically, patients need only one treatment to get satisfying results, but some may desire additional treatments for minor touch-ups. Patients should wait at least four months before undergoing subsequent procedures. Smartlipo permanently removes fat cells, but a significant amount of weight gain may reverse the effects of the procedure.

What Are the Risks and Side Effects of Smartlipo?

Although Smartipo is a less invasive surgery, there are still some risks involved with the procedure. These include:

  • Soreness
  • Minor bruising
  • Infection
  • Hematoma (pooling of the blood beneath the skin)
  • Scarring

Frequently Asked Questions About Smartlipo

How should I prepare for Smartlipo?

Even though Smartlipo is minimally invasive, you will still want to temporarily stop all nicotine use (including smoking and vaping) as this can increase your risk of complications and prolong your recovery period. You may also be asked to stop using all blood-thinning medication (including aspirin, ibuprofen, and NSAIDs). Blood-thinning herbal supplements should also be temporarily avoided.

How does Smartlipo differ from power-assisted liposuction?

Power-assisted liposuction injects a fluid into the treatment zone to shrink the blood vessels and numb this area. An electric handpiece is then used to break up the fat to allow for easier removal through the cannula. Even though this is still more comfortable than traditional liposuction, it is still more invasive than the laser-assisted liposuction used with Smartlipo.

How much does Smartlipo cost?

The cost of your Smartlipo will vary depending on how many areas are treated and the size of those treatment areas. Additional cost factors include anesthesia, facility, and surgeon fees. This fee will not include the cost of medication following your treatment; however, if you should require pain medication, your insurance may help.

Can I combine my Smartlipo with other surgical procedures?

Smartlipo can be performed alone or in combination with other body contouring procedures. While Smartlipo allows for minimal skin tightening, it cannot eliminate sagging skin the way that other procedures like tummy tuck surgery, thigh lift surgery, or arm lift surgery can.
