Smartlipo is a type of liposuction that utilizes laser technology. It can be performed on almost any area of the body to reduce localized fat deposits that cannot be reached with diet and exercise. It is a procedure meant to “sculpt” the body, and it should not be used as a weight loss surgery. Smartlipo is a minimally invasive procedure that is more gentle than traditional liposuction and can actually tighten the skin as well.
The ideal candidate for Smartlipo can relate to the following:
Because Smartlipo is a minimally invasive procedure, local anesthesia is administered to keep you comfortable during surgery. A cannula (hollow tube) with a laser fiber through it is inserted into the treatment area through a small incision. As the doctor moves the cannula back and forth under the skin, fat is vacuumed out. When the laser fiber comes in contact with the fat cells, it plumps them and they melt into a fatty oil. This triggers the production of collagen, which actually tightens the skin in the treated area. For this reason, laser-assisted liposuction is a better option than traditional liposuction for those with loose skin and areas of localized fat. Smartlipo is sometimes referred to as “lunch hour liposuction” because the entire procedure takes an hour or less.
Although the procedure is much quicker than regular liposuction, patients should still allow at least two days of downtime to recuperate. Because the incisions are so small, no stitches are needed. The laser closes off tiny blood vessels, so there is less chance of bleeding, swelling, and bruising compared to regular liposuction. Your doctor may suggest that you wear a compression garment to reduce any swelling and to help your body take on its new shape following the procedure.
Many begin to see the results of Smartlipo about a week after the procedure, but the final look may not be apparent for up to six months. Typically, patients need only one treatment to get satisfying results, but some may desire additional treatments for minor touch-ups. Patients should wait at least four months before undergoing subsequent procedures. Smartlipo permanently removes fat cells, but a significant amount of weight gain may reverse the effects of the procedure.
Although Smartipo is a less invasive surgery, there are still some risks involved with the procedure. These include:
